Looking After Your Joinery
Care guide.
Solid timber is built to last a lifetime with the right care. A little general guidance is below — we'll always give you specific advice for your finish when a project is completed.
Everyday care
Dust with a soft, dry cloth. Wipe up spills promptly rather than leaving liquid to sit on the surface, and avoid dragging anything abrasive across timber or painted finishes.
Heat, light and moisture
Solid timber moves slightly with changes in humidity and temperature, so keep pieces away from direct radiators and prolonged direct sunlight where possible, and use a coaster or mat under anything hot.
Oiled and waxed finishes
Oiled worktops and furniture benefit from an occasional light re-oiling — how often depends on use, but a well-used kitchen worktop is typically every few months. We'll talk you through the right routine for your specific finish.
Painted and lacquered finishes
Clean with a soft, slightly damp cloth and a mild, non-abrasive cleaner. Avoid solvents or harsh household chemicals, which can dull or damage the finish over time.
Ironmongery and hardware
Brass and metal handles and hinges can be wiped clean with a dry or barely damp cloth. Avoid abrasive polishes unless a natural, aged patina isn't the look you want.
